ROKAF brings traditional Korean games to Osan Elementary field day
OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea – Osan Elementary School students, staff, and families celebrated the theme of America’s 250th birthday by rotating through a variety of fun fitness and recreational activities during the school’s annual field day on May 29, 2026.
This year, members of the Republic of Korea Air Force AFOC S&S group joined the festivities to introduce OES students to the Korean traditional games of Tuho (arrow throwing), Jegichagi (circle kicking), and Paengichigi (plate spinning). Students also had the opportunity to try elements of the Korean military fitness test, which drew strong connections to their recent performance in the new Presidential Physical Fitness Test.
The traditional Korean games provided OES students with an opportunity to experience concepts they have learned about in Korean Culture class. Many of these games are commonly associated with holidays, festivals, and family gatherings in Korea. Participating in the activities helped students better understand the cultural significance of traditional play and how these games have been passed down through generations. The experience added another layer of meaning to their classroom learning and gave students a chance to engage with Korean culture in a fun and memorable way.
Sharing the joint air base in Osan acts as a unique opportunity to build mutual respect, improve communication, and strengthen the bonds of the longstanding ROK-US alliance.
